DEAR Micro Chip Clinic Held June 26

DEAR would like to thank all those who came out to support our first Micro Chip Clinic in Scotland Neck on June 26. The heat was brutal and was probably at the root of our light turnout. However, DEAR did chip 33 animals and gave a dozen rabies shots. DEAR was served shrimp dogs, hot dogs, and hamburger hot dogs. Island Ices provided some excellent ices. Thanks also to Petco who had their manager and a groomer present for the duration. Plus, both Halifax County Animal Control and a Halifax County sheriff department K-9 unit were available for demonstrations and information.

Thank you again on behalf of all of us at DEAR and our dogs! To see more pictures on the Micro Chip Clinic, please click this link.

Original Log Cabin Homes Donates to DEAR

ROCKY MOUNT NC (Dec. 2009) -- The mission of Down East Animal Refuge (DEAR) is to improve the conditions and health of animals by rescuing abused, stray and feral animals, promoting humane treatment and responsible pet ownership methodically through education and the law, and fostering compassion for all animals. By contributing to this refuge, The Original Log Cabin Homes and it's employees help to provide food and veterinarian services for these animals until they can be re-homed. More than 95% of Log Cabin Homes Employees are pet owners with many adopting abused or abandoned animals. Tom Vesce, a dog owner, found compassion for these animals by taking in a stray cat of his own.

Sallie Overton volunteers for a feline rescue group and all of her animals are recued animals!

    Going The Extra Mile
By Donna M. May, Down East Animal Refuge

Smart thinking and dedication turned what could have been a tragic situation into one that had a happy ending for one of the dogs of Down East Animal Refuge.

During a routine transport, one of the shelter dogs, Junior, managed to jump through an open window from the vehicle at a gas stop in Leggett, NC. Knowing that Junior was a very shy dog made his recapture a real challenge.

Down East Animal Refuge Rescues Injured Pit Bull

    UPDATED Sept. 7

SCOTLAND NECK – (Aug. 20) – On Saturday, August 15, Down East Animal Refuge (DEAR) was called to take in an injured female pit bull.

The unknown owner had placed a chain around the dog’s neck to tightly that the neck had grown around the chain. Somehow the chain fastener unhooked, allowing the dog to pull its neck free from the chain. In doing so, a gash about two inches deep appeared where the chain had pulled away.

The dog has since been taken to DEAR’s vet in Tarboro NC, in an attempt to save its life from infection. DEAR will incur a large medical bill for trying to save this dog.

Anyone who would like to make a donation to this dog’s cause is asked to please do so by either mailing a check to DEAR, P. O. Drawer 40, Scotland Neck, NC, 27874, or contacting any DEAR member, Questions concerning DEAR, this dog, or any of the dogs at its facility can be addressed by emailing information@downeastanimalrefuge.org.

DEAR has rescued over 300 dogs from the Scotland Neck community and placed them in homes from Rhode Island to Florida. DEAR has never asked the community to help with a medical bill before.

DEAR wanted to share this case with the public, to let it be known how dogs are being treated in the community.

DEAR states that the owner of the dog need not try to claim her, as they would then intend to prosecute the offender.

August 30 Update - Penny Sue will be coming home from the Vet on August 31. She is going to be be under the foster care of DEAR President Randall Melton.

Sept. 7 Update - Penny, our Pit Bull rescue, is doing well at my home. She is about the smartest dog I have seen come along. I can pull back on the harness and she will sit. I have her walking by my side. Understands when she's bad she goes to the crate. And she... responds to her name. She has no food or people aggression. She is about the friendliest dog I have worked with. This one might be hard to give up. She is full of personality. Please sign up as a fan on Face Book for further updates regarding Penny and DEAR events.

Sept. 15 Update - DEAR President, Randall Melton, will be taking on Penny on a full time basis. "She deserves a better home than where she came from," said Melton. Penny has been undergoing intense foster care training at his residence since early September.

We have the picture of this injured dog on a separate page. This photo is graphic. Please be forewarned. It is not a pretty sight. Please click here to view the photo.

Dec. 9 Update - I thought I would share these two after pictures of Penny Sue in her new home at my house.
