Going The Extra Mile By Donna M. May, Down East Animal Refuge

Smart thinking and dedication turned what could have been a tragic situation into one that had a happy ending for one of the dogs of Down East Animal Refuge. During a routine transport, one of the shelter dogs, Junior, managed to jump through an open window from the vehicle at a gas stop in Leggett, NC. Knowing that Junior was a very shy dog made his recapture a real challenge.

Down East Animal Refuge Rescues Injured Pit Bull
UPDATED Sept. 7 SCOTLAND NECK – (Aug. 20) – On Saturday, August 15, Down East Animal Refuge (DEAR) was called to take in an injured female pit bull.
The unknown owner had placed a chain around the dog’s neck to tightly that the neck had grown around the chain. Somehow the chain fastener unhooked, allowing the dog to pull its neck free from the chain. In doing so, a gash about two inches deep appeared where the chain had pulled away.
The dog has since been taken to DEAR’s vet in Tarboro NC, in an attempt to save its life from infection. DEAR will incur a large medical bill for trying to save this dog.
Anyone who would like to make a donation to this dog’s cause is asked to please do so by either mailing a check to DEAR, P. O. Drawer 40, Scotland Neck, NC, 27874, or contacting any DEAR member, Questions concerning DEAR, this dog, or any of the dogs at its facility can be addressed by emailing information@downeastanimalrefuge.org.
DEAR has rescued over 300 dogs from the Scotland Neck community and placed them in homes from Rhode Island to Florida. DEAR has never asked the community to help with a medical bill before.
DEAR wanted to share this case with the public, to let it be known how dogs are being treated in the community.
DEAR states that the owner of the dog need not try to claim her, as they would then intend to prosecute the offender. August 30 Update - Penny Sue will be coming home from the Vet on August 31.
